After waiting (patiently) for a Jailbreak for 1.1.1 to be released I have upgraded successfully my iPhone to 1.1.1.
While the jailbreak and re-activation is a tricky process, if you follow the jailbreak guide you should be fine.
One thing to notice is that my iPhone was unlocked using iPhone Sim Free, after having a little adventure with the unlocks. So iPSF claims
that their unlock survive the upgrade is true, and you’re safe if you have unlocked using their solution.
So, whats new in 1.1.1? Here’s a small list of what I observed:
- Some apps don’t work, such as Customize and Summerboard. While this is expectable, we’ll have to wait until the new version
- Nice home button and space double-click tricks. Nothing exciting tho.
- Phone functions (e.g.: Sending an SMS) appear a bit faster.
Verdict: If you are not waiting for something specific to be fixed, don’t bother upgrading now to 1.1.1, since the jailbreak is a lengthy and tricky process with no much to gain.
UPDATE 13/10/2007: A new (alpha) version of Summerboard for iPhone/iPod Touch 1.1.1 has just released!

What about the volume / sound quality of the ear piece and speaker phone. Has it improved?

I haven’t noticed any difference! Perhaps the loud speaker is a bit louder, but no much improvement!

Hi Andreas,
I am getting into problems trying to install ssh under 1.1.1 in order to activate it. I am using sshkit from nature but using the iphoneinterface of last version of ibrickr.
Everything seems to be going well, but when i try to connect using winscp it says connection refused. I checked and the wireless is working and i get ping to the iphone.
Any help,
Thanks

Hey great!
Can you give us your feedback on updates on 1.1.1 firmware?

Sorry, i went out the office and i am at home right now.
This a brief description of what i did:
1.- I followed your guide to SimFree my AnySim 1.0.2 unlocked iphone:
In my case, my iphone was not reporting any BAD IMEI after the AnySim unlock. It was working like a rock!.
I took out from the phone the non At&t SIM that i was using before running SimFree. After it finished my iphone was unlocked again but this time it was an IPSF unlock.
Make sure to take note of your IMEI, ICCID ( in the case it is not an AT&T sim), and the device ID of your iphone.
Make sure WIFI is on before continuing.
2.- I decided to go forward, so i updated the firmware 1.0.2 to 1.1.1. I followed the wikis 1.1.1 from the iphonegoboom.com.
This are the steps i followed:
*To update to 1.1.1,
Section 1,2,3 from this url: http://iphonegoboom.com/jailbreak/jailbreak111.html
*To install OPENSSH:
http://modmyiphone.com/wiki/index.php/Dev_Team_Installing_SSH_1.1.1_Windows
you have to create an account in this site to download the sshify 1.1.1 for windows.
*To install BSD World:
http://www.modmyiphone.com/wiki/index.php/Dev_Team_Install_BSD_World_1.1.1_Windows.
The steps above are mandatory in order to activate 1.1.1 under windows because you will need to upload some files and run some commands with putty.
*To activate it: i used this guide from the iphone dev team:
http://iphone.fiveforty.net/wiki/index.php/Activate_1.1.1 and follow the instructions from section Activate 1.1.1 on Windows (online).
You will use here your IMEI and ICCID.
At this point my iphone was activated and i didn’t need to unlock it again, it was just working…. the IPSF unlock upgrade from 1.0.2 to 1.1.1 was straightforward….
i made some calls to test and it is rocking….
Next week i will install Summerboard patch and Installer…
Thanks Andreas,
sserye.

Hi,
I accidentally erased what i posted here about the feedbacks on updates on 1.1.1 firmware…
Hope to post it again tomorrow…:-)

After the upgrade i have noticed the following things:
In my personal opinion, the “improved volume in the earpiece of the iphone” is not what i have expected. Still is a bit difficult to listen to some conversations. In fact this was one of the main reasons i took the risk to upgrade to 1.1.1 and i feel a disappointed.
The iphone Graphical interface seems to be a little bit faster and responsive but i am facing some issues with the new appinstaller. My old 3rd. party applications are showed as installed in appinstaller but are not being showed in the springboard. I tried to fix it and to make an uninstall & install again of some of them. I faced problems trying to uninstall Summerboard, and KB tweaks, i got this error “Error during uninstall script execution!”. I guess some futures updates of this apps will solve this issues.
The rest is working well and like a charm…
Regards,
Sserye.

Sserye I have a small issue: When I receive an sms, where the FROM field is Textual (for example: Orange) the message is scrambled. Do you have the same issue with your phone?
On the previous firmware, 1.0.2, SMS that had FROM field textual were not received at all.
October 14th, 2007 at 2:40 am
Andreas it works well in
my iphone, if the sms comes from a contact the iphone displays its name. Could your issue be a carrier issue?
October 15th, 2007 at 1:02 am
another possible issue:
I’ve noticed that when u check the battery usage is not being reported anymore even after a full battery charge.

Andreas,
have you found a solution for your #9 post? sms from orange or from skype (if not from a verfied user that has a phone numer as sender) and from google calendar reminders appear scrambled for me as well. it also seems that some texts come late or not at all, but that’s probably a differnet problem. i would be happy if the scrambled-sms thing would stop.

Hey Andreas,
I followed your method (IPSF) to upgrade my anySIM unlocked phone to 1.1.1 FW. I wonder whether it is safe to upgrade to FW 1.1.2 (I am using AT&T service so activation is not a big deal)?
November 9th, 2007 at 10:40 pm
As far as I know IPSF guys haven’t tested. I suggest you wait till we hear from them.
I’ll update this blog when I have news!

Hi Andreas!,
What do you think about the RSA bug exploited by IPSF in order to unlock??
After i migrated to IPSF following your excellent guide i feel a little bit worry about it.
I have read that i can restore my LTOKEN from the ipsf.cache file i got in my iphone after running IPSF. Anyway there have been some posts claiming success migrating from IPSF to Anysim 1.1.1 using the ipsf.cache, but i still consider it’s a risk because my iphone is rocking!
Just a thought!

Well, at the very end, it doesn’t matter how they managed to do it. IPSF works, and its upgrade proof. While anySIM patches the baseband firmware each time.
What do you want? Something that has to mess with your baseband each time, or an once-off solution?
And a computer science principle: If it works, don’t touch it

Yes, Good point!
